Mental Health and Wellbeing

Mental health and wellbeing services are available providing free support for a range of conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression, feelings of panic, and help for people of all ages who are experiencing distress and in need of immediate response. This includes support for issues arising from the coronavirus pandemic.

We are open and available to help but please remember to make an appointment first.

Telephone support – If you’re struggling with your mental health or need emotional support you can call:

  • Breathing Space on 0800 83 85 87 open weekdays Monday – Thursday 6 pm to 2 am and weekends Friday 6 pm – Monday 6 am. You can also visit www.breathingspace.scot
  • For urgent support please call NHS 24 on 111, 24 hours a day.

Counselling in Communities

  • They ask for a contribution for each weekly counseling session of between £5 and £45. Ability to pay does not affect your access to counseling.
  • They are based at the Pleasance, EH8 9RR.
  • They also offer outdoors counseling.


Stress Control Classes

Free 6 week evening classes; each week focuses on a different aspect of stress, how it affects us and how to cope with it. Classes are run in a lecture format with 20-40 people often attending during the day and up to 100 in the evening. You will never be asked to talk in front of the group or singled out. You will be given a booklet to accompany the class.

Coping With Anxiety Course

 Small groups of up to 10 people where you can participate in discussion, share experiences and practice methods of managing anxiety. Telephone and register your interest by leaving your name and contact details on the answering machine. A course facilitator will then get in touch with you to tell you about the course and discuss if its right for you. Courses are run in various venues across Edinburgh. Each course last for an hour and a half each week, for 6 weeks.

Exercise Course – Healthy Active Minds With Edinburgh Leisure

  • For people with mild to moderate low mood, anxiety, and depression.
  • A 12-week physical activity programme.
  • 12 week Edinburgh Leisure card for free access to gym, swim, and classes.
  • GP referral after.
